For the event, we created a team of concept artists, Morten Skaalvik and Yiming Liu, as well as senior concept artists Qiu Fang and Nesskain to learn more about their magical legends. Snowman washed into the wall with a hat.
The process of defining a new skin for any hero starts with an ideation phase. This is where concept artist, Morten Skaalvik, drafted the first version of Snowman Wrecking Ball. The ideation for this skin was chilly and snowy. Wrecking ball folded up in a red scarf, and clutched some joy. The art team begins to understand the concept after the ideation phase. Dr. Nosskain worked with the principal concept artist to finish this skin by adding a festive flair. We wanted to make Wrecking Balls legs and weapons look like they were built in Santa’s workshop. Nesskain turned the eye off by infusing the Wrecking Balls body with holiday spirit and transforming the feisty little hamster into a tribute to the jolly old St. Nick. Icewax Genji.
The Fang and Yiming Liu concept artist together to create the frosty and fierce Ice Wraith Genji. Fang began the idea by wrapping Genji in serrated lines and cutting frost you may recognize from other Blizzard properties. “In the concept phase, I started drawing reference from snow motifs and sharp edges that fits the Genjis edgy theme.” He was inspired to transform Genji into a mythical warrior encased in ice armor. Liu used various references, like Gothic arches and haunting ice wraiths. The wrath of Lich’s King says one thing that traces a lot of similar archetypes are visible. He polished the Genjis arms and armor by adding added extra detailing, which made this the best design for Liu. My favorite part of the skin is the ice that hangs on his armor. The ice is pretty neat and very clean, but with the help of the team, this detail looks pretty organic now and fits perfectly with the skin. Sleighing D.Va
Ice Wraith Genji was not the only beauty salon in the winter of the war. He was responsible for getting the idea out of Sleighing D.Vas concept and finally ending it. The inspiration came from a different perspective on the holidays, as was D.Vas second Winter Wonderland skin. Her dress is inspired by the Japanese Lolita fashion. It includes wide bell-shaped skirts that were built in Victorian style. D.Vas knee-high socks, paired with her bows on her hair and in her outfit, are essential for Lolita aesthetics. Take a look at her skirt, you can see that even her signature bunny logo has had a frosty makeover. I was very pleased to work on the pattern on D.Vas dress, said Fang. It was a really fun challenge to make her mech work as a sleigh with the bells and harnessed on her guns. With D.Va decked out in a holiday style, she’s ready to win the fight with her winter-y heroes. GG. Winter Wonderland becomes alive with these cheerful and bone-chilling cosmetics now at 11 AM. Remember to get this new skin from the game.
