Newly discovered data shows the unprofitable Epic Games store is and suggests why Epic Games is shifting towards publishing. In the Apple/Epic Games lawsuit, a lot of important information, otherwise known as the original, were revealed. Among the leaked documents included a claim Apple claim that Epic Games stores weren’t attempting to make a profit. Epic Games said that they didn’t expect its storefront to sell until 2023. Months after the lawsuit began, more courtroom documents appeared on Reddit, revealing that Epic Games will likely never make back what it spent on getting certain games exclusively to launch on the Epic Games store. The documents come from a strategy meeting held in July 2020. The most expensive recoupment in the games, analyzed by the GameDiscoverCo newsletter, did not occur in the chart below. Only three games had apparent benefit from their exclusivity costs (pic: Epic Games). What matters is that the pink section of the table represents cost that Epic will never make back, and that there is a lot of pink left. Perhaps one bit an exaggeration, Epic almost seems to forget the second half of the spend money to make money adage. Epic always has always been controversial. Where the games eventually won Steam, the developers usually have to wait at least once per year for the exclusivity deals to end. Its remained a persistent complaint, including Final Fantasy 7 remake that finally made its long awaited jump to PC, and became another Epic Games Store exclusive. That information is all news, but Epic has clearly been aware that it was losing money all of its time, although it remains to be seen whether this means it will improve its price and buy more exclusives in the future. GameDiscoverCo argues that this is why Epic launched its own publishing label back in March 2020, where it partners with studios to make games accessible on its storefront and other platforms. A slide also shows a change in the company’s long-term plans, with the intent to discuss switching from aggressively snapping exclusivity deals to focusing on onboarding top 100 games and other back catalogue.
