In an interview with Epic Games, the founder of the Game Awards had a good understanding of what this year is going to bring and what he hopes future iterations of the show will look like. While discussing the growing interest in the metaverse style of the show, he shared that he and his team are now thinking of new ways to distribute the show. They’re interested in utilizing new gaming technologies like Fortnite Creative and Core, to bring the event alive in completely new ways. The one area he’s sure isn’t going to venture into is using zero interest rates. The game – no gaming NFTs will not work. In his closing statement for the interview, Keighley assured fans that The Game Awards wouldn’t do anything NFT. A NFT is a digital receipt. While anyone can still find the online asset from an NFT that proves ownership on the internet and saves it to their desktop or phone, they will not technically own the item unless they have received the receipt. In addition, the use of NFTs can negatively affect the environment by fuelling the energy drain. Several games and developers are embracing the bandwagon of selling NFTs. It’s honestly a bit disappointing to see it. The studios like Square Enix and EA supported the NFTs. The latter described them as the future of the video games industry. Therefore, it’s refreshing to see Keighley, a big name in the industry, firmly support this environmentally harmful fad. Hopefully, more events and organizations will follow suit and NFTs will become an industry of the past, as well as YoLO and the cinnamon challenge.
