The Japanese Twitter account issued the warning less than a week before the holidays. “That weekend, access is focused on the Nintendo Account server. We expect that new Nintendo Accounts will not be created immediately,” wrote Nintendo. If you plan on using the Nintendo Switch family for the first time, you should try to create it in advance. After Christmas, Nintendo is expecting a rush of new players, all hoping to log in and set up their Nintendo Switch online accounts on Christmas day. This isn’t quite surprising given that the Nintendo sells over one million Switches last month and has seen many higher volumes of server traffic during the holidays. And think about that a million new Pokemon trainers come to the world at once, to find out the many hard times and surprises of the spectacular Diamond & Shining Pearl for the first time. Nintendo is right to be afraid of the cost of its servers. The problem also lies in Nintendo. Many soon-to-be Switch owners can’t create accounts until Christmas day, because it’s longing tradition to not open gifts until December 25. Maybe if there’s an internet failure at Nintendo, we’ll all have to start a new Christmas tradition where we can’t give up for a few days instead of packing everything into a single sack. Nintendo has over 32 million registered Nintendo Switch Online accounts last month. We expect that number to be higher in the coming months, especially given the coming release of Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Others might find it more attractive in the updated 3DS and Wii U offerings that have recently come to the Switch’s back catalog, including Moonbound and Captain U.
