Okami is a photorealistic farm smuggler.

In the last installment of the Kamiya Chronicles, Hideki explained how the development process of Okamis got done. Early in development, herealized that PlayStation 2 couldn’t handle large fields and forests in a photorealistic way, so so it was back into the drawing board. One of the game’s designers used a brush style to draw Amaterasus patterns, and Kamiya has decided to use this style for the entire game. Since the iconic look was achieved, he went back to the game. When they became major, they was often working on farming sim elements. I was working on a simulation game at the time. Things where seeds can sow to make a field, plow the field, and harvest crops, then use the plants to expand the field. More fields could be added, but you could dig riverside things like that. If only it was not a full-fledged agriculture simulation, then I tried it, and it didn’t be fun at all, but also in my heart, a result of it. It was just a bunch of game tiles lined up. The team had already decided to make Amaterasu an wolf-like character, but they were struggling to discover a core mechanic. At Kamiyas request, a team of eight people brainstormed through the weekend. Eventually, Kamiya proposed that Amaterasu use the Celestial Brush to interact with the world, but it was well received. The rest is history! Okami is a lot of different games than the film simulation that was first imagined, but its much better for them. Source:
