After months and years of speculation Ubisoft has finally confirmed they’re working on a new Splinter-Cellular, rather than an old one. To be fair, a remake of the original from 2002 is still the most obvious place to start in terms of reviving the series, even if it’s not necessarily anyone’s favourite entry. It was, though, a stealth game that was heavily influenced by Metal Gear Solid. So it will be interesting to see whether Ubisoft is trying to water that down for a good reason, as they did later in sequels. According to a blog post annoning the remake, work has barely begun, so don’t expect to see it anytime soon. The game is being designed by Far Cry 6 developer Ubisoft Toronto, and will use the latest version of the Snowdrop engine from The Division 2, and is being used in the new Avatar and Star Wars games and more. Accordingly, Ubisoft are going to deliver new-generation visuals and games; and the dynamic lighting and shadows the series is known for are an important part of the world’s history. What I thought was done was make sure that the spirit of the early games kept intact, in all the ways that helped the early Splinter Cell to grow a character, says a producer. We’ll update it visually and in particular in the design to match player comfort and expectations, and we’ll keep it linear, like the original and not make it open world. What has been reported as the open world comment grew. Ubisoft is planning a new Splinter Cell which is at least partially open world (compared to Halo infinite), the leak is the same as the initial reports that the game was in the obscurity. This new announcement probably doesn’t make this rumour any more or less likely to be true, and it seems that Ubisoft is working on a new game and simultaneously with the remake.
