The original title, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, launched in 2002 on several platforms, including the PS2 and the Xbox. While it was respected for its impressive graphics and stealth action, the last release of the 2013 album, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, came out on the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U. The Next Splinter Cell, related to Hitman’s article, has a number of things. The remake will be rebuilt from the ground up, with the ‘Snowdrop’ engine, a new engine that will power future Ubisoft games Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and a Star Wars title. This engine is going to deliver “new-generation visuals and gameplay”, Ubisoft said. The French giant announced the remake with a teaser film. There is no date of release yet, but the developer is looking for talent to do the title research so we can assume that the remake is still in its relatively early stages. In a post about the project from the site of Ubisoft, those on the project revealed more detail about the remake. “To me a remake takes what you’re going to do in a remaster and goes a little further,” said producer Matt West. “The original Splinter Cell has a lot that was amazing and revolutionary at the time it came out, 19 years ago,” inadvertently making anyone who played the original feel ancient. “The game-tasting public has more refined tastes. Normally it’s a remake instead of a remaster.” The creative director Chris Auty said what made the Splinter Cell games so special: “We recognize a huge part of the appeal of Splinter Cell is the flawless planning, execution and satisfaction you feel when you go in and do all that you can,” he said. “Seeing your mastery on display at the end of things, especially when you do a random check-off, is a major part of Splinter Cell’s experience, and we want to be certain we honor that.” West also mentioned the famous slogan of the series: “The phrase ‘Stealth Action Redefined’ from the original game really proved to be a very valuable North Star for us,” he said. Splinter Cell fans will certainly remember these stunning shadows, and it’s interesting to imagine what Sam Fisher could look like on modern consoles.
